Here’s a bookmark link to a document on How to Evaluate a Scanner from Derek Jenkins of IImage Retrieval, Inc. He rightly points out that scanner selection involves making compromises between the following areas of concern:
- Image Quality
- Reliability
- Performance
- Functionality
- Cost
A key point that I keep forgetting is the fact that a master scan is that image arriving in the computer’s memory. From there it is converted to a derivative for saving as any number of file formats: TIFF, PDF, JPEG, etc. Plus, it the scanning CCD usually only samples in either 8 bit or 24bit. Any other setting will involve a calculation that results in a derivative.
Two targets are mentioned in the piece as being crucial for checking a scanner, both microfilm and regular:
Kodak TL5003 “Old Man” Target $125
GreTag Macbeth Color Checker $60 & up
